Ambassadör Ilan Ben-Dov kommenterar det officiella svenska uttalandet om situationen vid gränsen mellan Israel och Gaza:
The Swedish official response to the latest events on the border between Israel and Gaza was disappointing.
The statement refers explicitly to Israel while completely ignoring the radical Islamist terrorist organization Hamas. Hamas is not referred to by its name even once.
The statement refers to “both sides” of the conflict and in doing so makes equivalence between Hamas – a murderous terrorist organization – and the only democracy in the Middle East, Israel.
The statement is referring to the “right to pursue peaceful protests” while, as we know, nothing could be further removed from such a description. What we have seen were violent riots, organized and orchestrated by Hamas terrorists – some of them throwing explosives and Molotov cocktails at the Israeli border.
What we have seen in the last two days is thousands of Palestinians that were sent by Hamas to breach and infiltrate the border.
They were sent by an organization that is calling for the destruction of the Jewish State but this was not at all mentioned in the Swedish statement.
Only a few hundred meters from the border, on Israeli territory, there are several Israeli communities with schools and kindergartens.
Israel has not only the right but also the obligation to protect its borders and its citizens. Any other country in the world would have acted the same.
We would certainly expect a much more balanced Swedish response that would take into consideration the right of Israel to protect its citizens.
