Open letter to TV4- following the removal of a cooking show episode referring to Jerusalem as ‘the heart of Israel”
In an episode of a popular cooking show featuring celebrity chef Tina Nordström, travelling around the country, she refers to Jerusalem as ‘the heart of Israel’.
Following pressures by extreme anti-Israel activists, the whole episode has been removed from the TV4 internet archives because of this one, perfectly innocent remark.
Regardless of one´s political and ideological convictions there is no way to construe the phrase in question as in any way offensive or insulting, unless one would be under the influence of an anti-Israel bias of the most violent kind. Certainly, on would not imagine this to be the case of TV 4.
The phrase ‘Jerusalem is the heart of Israel’, I repeat, is obviously not a political statement to be contested – it is an expression of the emotional centrality of Jerusalem to most Israelis and most Jews. It does not in itself exclude a parallel statement with reference to the Palestinians.
Even those expressing the idea that Jerusalem should be the capital of two peoples would not dream of denying the fact that Jerusalem will continue to be ‘the heart of Israel’.
Only if you deny the basic legitimacy of the Jewish state altogether, can you come to the conclusion that the reference in question is unacceptable or in any way prejudicial to the Palestinians.
It is sad, troubling and very surprising that TV4 would give in to such extremist pressures, that have the express goal of delegitimizing the State of Israel altogether. Also, the episode in question has been aired previously and obviously deemed suitable in all respects.
The current urge to censor even the most mildly positive coverage of the Jewish State raises serious concerns.
I am convinced that on second thought TV4 will have the good sense to reverse such an untenable position of bias and censorship.
