Israel is celebrating its 73rd Independence Day.
On such a day one can hardly refrain from thinking in historical terms.
It is difficult not to be deeply touched in the face of the most important revolution ever to occur in the history of the Jewish people since the destruction of Jewish statehood by the Romans almost 2000 years ago. The Zionist revolution – and the reestablishment of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel, the ancient homeland of the Jewish people.
There is no precedent for such a story in all the course of human history. A people that was deported form its homeland, lived for 2000 years in exile, suffered persecutions, hatred, oppression, racism, expulsion from one place to the other and was defenseless against Nazi extermination, and yet succeeded to return to its ancient homeland, renew its language, revive its culture and reestablish its independence.
73 years after its rebirth, Israel is a spectacular success story!
Israel is a flourishing state with a an open, vibrant, pluralistic and dynamic society.
Despite all difficulties, Israel has turned a forgotten piece of desert into a blooming country which has become one of the significant international players in the fields of science, research, advanced technologies, creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation.
Israel is an island of stability, a democracy which upholds the rule of law and equality before the law, gender equality and social welfare – all this in an ocean of non-democratic nations, among them failed states, violent regimes and dictatorships.
In the last year, Israel, as all other nations in the world, has had to face the global Corona pandemic. Our nation is mourning the more than 6000 Israelis who fell victim to this terrible disease. Israel has succeeded in very rapidly vaccinating the major part of its population. We are still not at the end-stage of the epidemic but can certainly see the light at the end of the tunnel.
This year, we also succeeded to sign peace agreements with four more Arab nations. For us, Israelis, this is a tremendous achievement and a major, historic breakthrough. Peace with our Arab neighbours is the ultimate dream of every Israeli.
Looking into the future, we have many hopes and challenges ahead. Israel will proceed to strive for excellence in the arts, science, education and the economy. We will continue to stand strong and protect our citizens against those who want to hurt us, while at the same time reaching out our hand for peace with all our neighbours.
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!
